Filler procedures, did you only think of volume? The secret of the hidden 'lifting effect' ✨
Written by: Dr. Yeseul Moon / Published on: 2025-07-13

Hello, PICKLS members! As fellow enthusiasts of the intellectual pursuit of beauty and health, I'd like to share some exciting research findings with you today. When you think of filler procedures, it's easy to only consider them as treatments to fill in sunken areas and restore volume. However, a recently published paper is drawing attention by presenting objective analysis results on another significant effect of filler procedures: 'lifting'.
1.
The Magic of Fillers That Changes with Injection Location: Volume vs. Lifting
This study precisely measured skin displacement and volume changes through 3D scanning after filler injection in facial cadavers.
As a result, it was objectively confirmed that fillers induce a lifting effect that actually lifts tissues, beyond simply filling volume.
2.
The key lay in the difference in the anatomical structure of each facial area!
The soft tissue of our face is not simply a single mass but is composed of multiple layers, and there are structures that support and connect each layer.
Medial Face:
The medial face (forehead, medial midface, and perioral area) has a complex structure where muscles and ligaments connect across multiple layers. Due to these structural characteristics, even when filler is injected, its effect tends to focus primarily on filling the volume in that area. Therefore, the lifting effect that raises surrounding areas appears relatively minimal. The position of the eyes and mouth also influences the movement and connectivity of the medial midface, acting as a factor that limits the lifting effect.
Lateral Face:
On the other hand, the lateral face (temple, lateral midface, and jawline) has soft tissue layers that are arranged relatively parallel to the surface. And these layers are connected to each other through supporting structures called 'retaining ligaments'. These retaining ligaments form a line extending from the temple to the cheekbone and jawline, serving as a criterion for dividing the face into medial and lateral regions.
When filler is injected into the lateral face, due to the interaction between these parallel soft tissue layers and the retaining ligaments, the injected filler generates a force that pushes not only the targeted area but also the connected surrounding tissue upward together. This is similar to the principle where if you lift one part of a cloth connected by several strings, the other connected parts also follow suit. In particular, the study confirmed that this regional lifting effect is further enhanced when filler is injected into two or more of the temple, lateral midface, and jawline areas.
In conclusion, the complex and well-supported structure of the medial face focuses the filler effect on localized volume enhancement, whereas the layered structure and connectivity of the retaining ligaments in the lateral face are the key reasons why filler lifts surrounding tissues together.

Lateral face filler treatment, the key to overall facial line improvement
This suggests that lateral facial procedures can play an important role in improving the overall facial line, beyond just improving the specific area.
Of course, since this study was conducted on cadavers, various factors must be considered when applying it to living people. However, it is highly significant in that it objectively revealed the hidden lifting effect of filler procedures.
4.
Through this paper, we are led to think once again about the potential of filler procedures.
Beyond simply filling in недостающий volume, we can expect facial line improvement and lifting effects through strategic procedure design.
If you are considering filler procedures in the future, we recommend consulting thoroughly with a medical professional based on these scientific analysis results to create the most suitable treatment plan for you.
