Winter break is an excellent time for students to consider undergoing cosmetic surgery. Among these, double eyelid surgery is the most common and popular procedure in Korea, drawing significant interest even among middle and high school students. However, for those considering surgery for the first time, every step from choosing a clinic to recovery can feel unfamiliar and daunting. This post aims to provide a brief guide to preparing for the procedure.

1.

Choosing a Hospital

Narrow down a few hospitals through YouTube, the internet, etc., and get consultations. It’s important to choose a place that fits your style and is trustworthy. Ideally, choose a hospital where the head doctor is a "plastic surgeon specialist," as they generally have more experience with cosmetic surgeries. Look for a "specialist in plastic surgery" rather than a hospital with an "xx hospital specialist" or a "plastic surgery department" that doesn’t have a "specialist in plastic surgery." Personally, I recommend narrowing it down to no more than 5 hospitals for consultations instead of consulting too many. During consultations, ensure that communication with the specialist is comfortable, the hospital responds quickly, and the system is well-organized.

2.

Preparing for a consultation

Before going for a consultation, check the following to ensure an efficient session.

• Setting needs and goals: Double eyelid surgery can help not only for cosmetic reasons but also for functional problems like heavy eyelids obstructing your vision. Ask yourself, "Why do I want surgery?" and clarify your needs and goals. Don\'t just make the decision based on trends or advice from parents or friends. Carefully consider the impact it will have on your appearance and quality of life.

• Understanding your own eyes: Understand your eye shape, skin condition, and fat volume, and think specifically about the results you want. It’s helpful to look at other cases online or on social media, but rather than just observing, try to analyze the differences with eyes that are similar to yours. Of course, the hospital will recommend the best and safest option, but if you understand the pros and cons yourself, choosing will be much easier.

3.

Surgical Methods

The appropriate method for double eyelid surgery depends on the individual’s eye condition.
• Non-incision method (buried suture method): This method creates a line without cutting the skin and is suitable for people with thin skin and no sagging. Recovery is fast, but over time, the line may loosen.
• Natural adhesion method: This method partially cuts the skin to remove fatty tissue that blocks the adhesion of the double eyelid line and creates a line with sutures. It has good durability and relatively fast recovery.
• Incision method: This method involves fully cutting the skin to create a line, suitable for those with thick or sagging skin. It has excellent durability but requires a longer recovery period, so a longer break is needed during vacation.
• Eye shape correction: This method corrects weak eyelid muscles to create clearer eyes if the muscles that lift the eyelids are weak.

Consult with a specialist to determine the need for the procedure.

4.

Pre-surgery preparation checklist

• Stopping the use of double eyelid tape/solution: Skin that has been using double eyelid tape or solution for a long time becomes dry and thick, which interferes with the formation of the double eyelid line. Stop usage at least 2 weeks before surgery and provide sufficient moisturizing care.
• Health check-up: Inform the medical team about any allergies, medical history, and medications you are taking.
• Fasting and medication precautions: Fasting (around 6 hours) and discontinuing certain medications on the day of surgery are essential.
• Psychological preparation: Set realistic expectations and discuss thoroughly with the medical team to visualize the results.

5.

Post-operative care

• Swelling management: Apply cold compresses initially, followed by warm compresses to aid recovery.
• Surgical site care: Maintain cleanliness to prevent infection and use prescribed medications as directed.
• Minimize eye use: Reduce reading and smartphone use to prevent eye fatigue.
• Caution with makeup and lenses: To minimize irritation at the surgical site, start makeup at least 2-3 weeks after surgery, and switch to glasses instead of contact lenses.

"Plastic surgery is best utilized only to overcome the shortcomings of your appearance and enhance your strengths. I hope you meet a more beautiful version of yourself through a healthy and safe journey.
